ABOUT CLEVELAND BALLET

In 2014 a group of dedicated volunteers and artists reconnected to build on the artistic legacy of the Cleveland San Jose Ballet and form Cleveland Ballet. Under the artistic leadership and vision of Gladisa Guadalupe, Cleveland has the opportunity to welcome a professional and resident dance company back to the stage.

RETURNING TO THE STAGE

Cleveland Ballet marked its return to the Cleveland arts scene with the artistically and financially successful October 2015 production, Past. Present. Future. This production featured a full evening of traditional and innovative ballet performed in collaboration with Neos Dance Theatre of Mansfield, Ohio under the co-direction of Neos’ Bobby Wesner and Cleveland Ballet’s Gladisa Guadalupe. The collaboration addresses an important Cleveland Ballet tenant, to create artistic partnerships with the area’s leading cultural organizations. This debut production was presented to a nearly sold-out audience and exemplified Cleveland Ballet’s collaborative spirit, and the community support demonstrates that a passion for professional ballet exists in Cleveland.

As we prepare for our second production in our inaugural season, Cleveland Ballet has simultaneously  established a number of exciting education and outreach programs such as our collaboration with Warrensville Heights and Bedford School Districts, and The Cleveland Orchestra’s Family Concert series.

The world premiere production of Coppélia, choreographed by the acclaimed artist Ramón Oller, will conclude our inaugural season.

THE RESIDENT PROFESSIONAL COMPANY

For the past two years, Ms. Guadalupe has conducted auditions across the country to build a professional and resident company. Currently, Cleveland Ballet has contracts with ten professional dancers to create the 2015-2016 company. The plans are to increase the professional company to 14 members. A company of professional resident dancers means that Cleveland Ballet can assure its audiences experience productions that exhibit artistry of the the highest caliber. An exemplary company also provides guest and resident choreographers an opportunity to craft unique works that speak to our Cleveland talent. In short, a resident professional dance company will transform Cleveland’s performing arts landscape by completing our cultural landscape and adding to our city’s exciting renaissance.

Without compromising artistic standards, the new Cleveland Ballet will be smaller, more flexible, and more innovative than traditional ballet companies. Should additional dancers be needed, Cleveland Ballet will audition dancers from Cleveland and surrounding areas as well as collaborate with other professional ballet companies such as Joffrey Ballet Concert Group of New York City.

During its brief tenure, Cleveland Ballet has contributed and will continue to contribute to the cultural richness of Northeast Ohio, impacting the economy as well as the quality of life.
